The DEPARTMENT OF MODERN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES presents:
In an unnamed African country in the grips of civil war a French woman (Isabelle Huppert) desperately tries to hold on to her coffee plantation and her way of life. Oblivious to the mounting danger, she searches for workers who will finish the harvest, endangering those close to her and risking everything to save the livelihood she has always known.
One of Europe's most prominent filmmakers, Claire Denis draws in White Material upon her experience of growing up in colonial West Africa. Nominated for the Golden Lion Award at the 2009 Venice Festival.
