MLL Travel Grants for Summer/Fall 2022

Application for Merit-Based Study Abroad Travel Grant

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION:   At least one letter must be from an MLL department faculty member/instructor and one letter must be from a NON-MLL department faculty member/instructor. Two letters of recommendation are required.

To support your study abroad summer or semester trips, the MLL department awards merit-based travel grants to qualified students twice a year.

We strongly encourage study abroad as a means of strengthening language skills and acquiring new cultural appreciation and global experience. Spending a summer, a semester, or a full year abroad is an amazing, life-changing experience that you will never forget!

Exchange agreements with partner institutions are continually being developed in collaboration with the Office of Study Abroad. In addition to Lehigh-approved programs, we offer several exciting Lehigh faculty-led winter and summer programs in China, Martinique, and Spain. Lehigh also offers summer programs through the Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges (LVAIC). Programs are offered in Bonn (Germany), Seville (Spain), and Panama for eight credits each. A faculty member acting as program director accompanies the students. Courses are taught at the intermediate and advanced levels by qualified instructors from host institutions

Application deadline is February 25, 2022

Applications for Undergraduate Research Grant

Grant applications require a faculty advisor's support and endorsement. Students are expected to consult with the faculty advisor on the project when drafting the proposal and throughout the (funded) project.

The College of Arts and Sciences offers funding to encourage students to engage in independent inquiry, artistic creation, and scholarship, under faculty supervision. These grants are intended to enhance opportunities for undergraduate research in the college. Funds for this award are generally used for research materials, lab materials, travel costs associated with data collection, other expenses related to research or experiential learning such as fellowship stipends for summer research. Grants will normally fall into a range from $500 to $5,000.

These grants are designed to increase undergraduate research and creative inquiry in our college. Students in the arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and mathematics are encouraged to apply.

Proposal Deadline for Summer 2022 Projects is Friday, February 25, 2022

Don't just take our word for it! This is what Lehigh Students are saying about their study-abroad expereinces:

Kimberly Meija (Madrid, Spain) Spring 2018

"I had a wonderful time abroad in Spain. It was a great opportunity to learn about myself and a different facet of my culture. I enjoyed meeting new people and learning about the history of the country. Without the travel grant, my experience wouldn't have been possible. Studying abroad can be expensive, so receiving the grant definitely helped offset some of the costs associated with the experience. I'm very grateful to the Modern Languages and Literatures Department for helping me make my dream of traveling come true."

Delaney McCaffrey (Capetown, South Africa and Berlin, Germany) Spring 2018

"I spent my semester abroad in Cape Town, South Africa for six weeks, and Berlin, Germany for 12 weeks through the CIEE Open Campus program. I had the most amazing time while I was abroad! I got to travel to 11 new countries across two continents, and I had so many great opportunities to learn through cultural immersion. The MLL travel grant was essential in helping me to afford these experiences."

Kiana Nieves (Alicante, Spain) Spring 2018

"It was the most amazing thing that I have ever done. I was able to immerse myself in the culture by living with a Spanish family and I traveled on the weekends to many different countries. I traveled through Spain and learned about the history and even visited one of the Seven Wonders of the World!

I was able to use it to pay for my program fees, which included a trip to Grenada, where Queen Isabel and King Fernando are buried (They funded Christopher Columbus to sail the ocean blue!)."
